Why Volunteer?

Volunteers are the backbone of a successful horse show!

From managing the arena to assisting judges and keeping the schedule running smoothly, every role plays a crucial part in ensuring a fair, organized, and enjoyable event for riders and spectators.

Without dedicated volunteers, the show simply wouldn’t happen.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the equestrian community, learn more about the sport, and be part of the excitement—whether you’re a seasoned horse person or just love being around horses. Your time and effort make all the difference!

How to Volunteer

Our club needs many different roles to be filled to make our shows a success! Most roles don’t require prior training, but some do.

Volunteer positions that require no prior training or Volunteer Coordinator approval:

  • Runners — Transport dressage test sheets from the judges to the scorers, ensuring timely and accurate scoring. They keep the flow of paperwork moving efficiently.

  • Gate Stewards — Manage the in-gate and out-gate, ensuring riders enter the competition arena on time and in the correct order. They help maintain the show schedule and assist with traffic flow.

  • Ring Stewards — Oversee the warm-up and competition areas, ensuring safety, order, and adherence to show rules. They check tack and attire if required and help riders stay on schedule.

  • Parking Attendant — Direct and assist divers in getting to the designated parking areas. Answer any questions they might have about the show layout and where to check in.

If necessary, these roles can be taught on the day of the show. If you need instruction, please get in touch with the Volunteer Coordinator before the show or arrive at least fifteen minutes before your assigned time.

Volunteer Positions that require special training and Volunteer Coordinator approval:

  • Scribes — Sit with the judge and record scores and comments on the test sheets as the judge dictates. This role requires a focus on quick writing and good listening skills.

  • Scorers — Calculate and verify scores from' the judg’s' test sheets, ensuring accuracy before posting results. Attention to detail is key in this role.

Given the nature of the duties required by these positions, prior instruction and training are needed before a person can be considered for them. If you have any questions about what you need to know before volunteering in these roles don't hesitate to contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

End-of-Year Awards

Volunteer hours are required for members to qualify for the End-of-Year Awards:

Eight hours for Adults and Two hours for Junior/Young Riders.

For Adult Riders, three of these hours may be completed by another person. This person does not have to be a member of LPSDC, but the Volunteer Coordinator must approve them before they can fulfill any volunteer role.

The person performing volunteer hours for another member must be declared before or on the day of the show. Hours cannot be given to other members after the show is finished.

Junior/Young Riders may not have any volunteer hours performed by another individual.

Please see the Schooling Show Omnibus for more information about these and other rules.
